The Game (Traditional Rule)

  • Decide who will go first (e.g. odd or even).
  • The first player gives the coordinates of his shot by providing the number and letter equivalent to the square he shot.
  • The second player answers whether the shooting location is WATER (when the square is empty), FIRE (when it hits a part of a ship) or SANK (when it hits the entire ship or all parts of the ship).
  • Whoever is shooting marks the spot in the area “OPPONENT'S GAME" Water is marked with a dot, fire with an X and sunken with a painted square and dots around it, as no ship can touch another.
  • The opponent cannot tell the type of ship, only whether it was FIRE or SUNK. The other player must find out through the chances of shots.
  • If the shot hits the water, the second player's turn passes to the next player. If the shot hits a ship (part or whole), the player can shoot again.

Alternative Rule for Battleship Game:

  • Decide who will go first (e.g. odd or even).
  • The first player gives the coordinates of 3 (three) shots providing the number and letter equivalent to the square that was shot.
  • The opponent may or may not report the type of ship that was hit (FIRE). This rule must be agreed upon before starting the game.
  • After finishing the 3 shots, the turn passes to the other player. Each player has 3 shots per round, regardless of whether they hit a ship.

Other Rules for the Battleship Game (Pen and Paper Game)

Game Objective

The goal of Battleship is to try to sink all of the other player's ships before they sink all of your ships. All of the other player's ships are somewhere on your board. You try to hit them by calling out the coordinates of one of the squares on the board. The other player also tries to hit your ships by calling out coordinates. Neither you nor the other player can see each other's board, so you must try to guess where they are. Each board in the physical game has two grids: the bottom (horizontal) part for the player's ships, and the top (vertical during the game) part for recording the player's guesses.

Starting a New Game

Each player places the 5 ships somewhere on their board. Ships may only be placed vertically or horizontally. Diagonal placement is not allowed. No part of a ship may extend beyond the edge of the board. Ships may not overlap. No ship may be placed on top of another ship.

Once the guessing starts, players cannot move their ships.

The 5 ships are: Aircraft Carrier (takes up 5 spaces), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3) and Destroyer (2).

Playing the Game

Players take turns making guesses by calling out coordinates. The opponent responds with “hit” or “miss” as appropriate. Both players should mark their board with pegs: red for a hit, white for a miss. For example, if you call F6 and your opponent has no ships located at F6, your opponent responds with “miss.” You record the miss at F6 by placing a white peg at the bottom of your board at F6. Your opponent records the miss in the same way.

When all the squares that one of your ships occupies have been hit, the ship will be sunk. You must announce “hit and sunk”. In the physical game, a red peg is placed on the top edge of the vertical board to indicate a sunken ship.

Once all of a player's ships have been sunk, the game ends.
